WHO WE ARE
Lance has a distinguished history of innovation in the creation and structuring of financial products. In 1995, he sold the leading equity and derivatives firm he had founded, Lorenzani & Coogan Inc, to UBS, later becoming Head of Equities and Derivatives for UBS(SA). From 2006 he became a leading figure in the Carbon Market, designing and transacting a large number of new financial products. He was a consultant to the World Bank and many Governments on Carbon and Carbon Derivatives. Between 2006 and 2011, he brokered over 50% of all CER listed option derivative contracts on the European Climate Exchange. More recently, Lance has applied his knowledge and skills to water, designing a Water Index Methodology for the Murray Darling Basin in Australia and a Water Trading Model and Water Exchange for Southern Africa. He has also designed and finalised a Water Credit Trading System for the UK, as well as a Pan-US Water Credit Trading System to address the imbalance of water distribution in the USA. He conceptualised, formulated and created the first ever Water Index Pricing Methodology, which has a provisional patent registered in the USA.
Robin BieberNon-Executive Director
Robin has a long history in the oil broking and trading market. In the late 1980s, he was instrumental in developing the Brent Crude oil futures market on the then IPE (now ICE) exchanges. It was subsequently one of the most successful fee-generating listed contracts of all time. He recently retired as a Director, principal shareholder and partner at leading oil broker PVM, and was part of the team that negotiated the sale of the firm to Tullett Prebon. A well-known figure in the oil business, Robin’s daily oil report is highly respected and widely read.
Dr. Karl-Georg AltenburgNon-Executive Director
Karl is Executive Vice President & Vice Chairman of the Board of Plastic Energy Ltd., a first mover in chemical recycling of end-of-life plastic waste into synthetic hydrocarbon fuels and new plastics. Karl serves as Senior Advisor to Citigroup and member of its EMEA Advisory Board. He is a Non-Executive Director of MedShr Ltd. He worked more than 25 years in Investment Banking. Until June 2016 he was Co-Head Corporate Finance Europe, Middle East & Africa at Deutsche Bank in London and a member of its Corporate Banking & Securities Executive Committee. Prior to that Karl worked over a period of 20 years for JPMorgan, in New York and London in various roles in Capital Markets and Corporate Finance and from 2005 to 2014 in Frankfurt as CEO for Germany, Austria & Switzerland. In 2000 he co-founded Inquam Ltd, a specialist provider of professional mobile telecommunication services, for which he served as CFO until 2004. Between 2011 and 2014 he served as President of the German Tennis Federation (DTB) and today is a member of its advisory board. He holds a degree in mechanical engineering from RWTH Aachen and a doctorate in technical science from the University of Technology in Vienna.
Calvin WalkerLegal and Commercial Director
Calvin is the former Global Head of Project Finance at Baker McKenzie and has worked with Veles on all legal aspects of its development and products since the company’s inception in 2016. Calvin has more than 30 years’ experience as a commercial and financial lawyer and is recognised as a leader in the field of international energy and infrastructure project finance. He has been a partner at two of the world’s leading international law firms with hands-on deal experience across a broad spectrum of the energy and infrastructure space, including Power, Water, Oil and Gas, Transport and Health. Calvin is a qualified English law solicitor and is also a highly regarded professional trainer. He is a well known speaker and commentator in the global project finance market.
Patrick BirleyAdvisory Board
Patrick has a successful track record in the financial markets with a career that spans exchanges and clearing houses across a broad variety of sectors. He has served at the highest level including as CEO of SAFEX, the European Climate Exchange (which was sold to ICE for £400m) and now NEX Exchange. Patrick combines an insightful strategic vision with an energetic and hands-on personal style that has gained him a reputation for straight talking, producing results and delivering success.
Prof. Tony ConwayAdvisory Board
Tony was an Executive Director of United Utilities, the largest listed water utility company in the UK. With extensive experience in water, gained over thirty years, he has led asset management, operations and engineering functions, engaging in multi-billion pound programs. With a focus on innovation and transformation he is a Visiting Professor at the University of Sheffield Water Centre, and advises a range of organisations operating in the water sector providing strategic insight.
Clay LandryAdvisory Board
Clay Landry has over 25 years of experience in water acquisition and valuation projects in the US, including currently managing the largest water rights acquisition program there, on behalf of the Central Arizona Groundwater Replenishment District. As well as being MD and Founder at WestWater Research, He is recognized as a leading authority on water pricing and is routinely called upon as an expert witness for both governmental and private entities.
Nick SumptionAdvisory Board
Nick Sumption’s knowledge and experience in the UK water industry is unrivalled. Recent roles include: Director at Thames Water (leading the Tideway Tunnel project 2014/2015) and Commercial Team Leader for JV Scottish Water Solutions (2003/2004). Nick set up his own consultancy in 2015 and now provides specialist advice to infrastructure and utility clients and contractors. Nick co-created and launched the Infrastructure Industry Innovation Platform (i3P) in 2016 where he continues to act as an advisor.
Duncan RieflerAdvisory Board
Duncan Riefler is an investor and advisor with Merchant Bank, Revere Global. Duncan began his career with Discount Corp of NY who were early practitioners in the trading of financial futures for fixed income products. He spent 19 years in the UK with Merrill Lynch as a pioneer in the European high yield and leveraged loan markets. He then co-founded a European credit and distressed debt trading brokerage operation now owned by Guggenheim. Duncan has vested interests in water related businesses. Beyond his involvement with Veles Water, he has interests in Parabel (https://www.parabel.com), which cultivates a plant based nutritional, protein laden food ingredient that is cultivated in aqua-ponds, recycling 99% of the water. He is active with a mitigation bank, EchoLandCo, also located in Florida which manages credits associated with protecting wetlands. He has recently been co-hosting Zoom roundtables for water education on the 361Firm family office network. He is advises and raises capital for European credit funds with ESG initiatives. Duncan is a 1981 history major at Denison University and is now a resident of Florida.
